Remote control has actually existed for a long time. In World War I and World War II, radio frequency equipment was used to remotely control ships and explosive devices. Eventually, scientists will figure out how to integrate the technology into various electronic devices.
When it comes to TV and home theater equipment, the main technology tends to be infrared. An infrared remote control (also called a transmitter) uses light to transmit signals from the remote control to the device it controls. It emits invisible infrared light pulses corresponding to specific binary codes.
These codes represent commands such as turn on, turn up the volume, or turn down the channel. The controlled device (also called the receiver) decodes the infrared pulse of light into a binary code that its internal microprocessor can understand. After the signal is decoded, the microprocessor will execute the command.
The infrared remote control uses LED lights to transmit its infrared signal. This leads to some limitations of the technology. Since light is used to transmit the signal, the infrared remote control requires a line of sight, which means you need to establish an open path between the transmitter and receiver. This means that the infrared remote control will not be able to pass through walls or corners. Their range is also limited, about 30 feet.
The working mode of the radio frequency remote control is similar to this. However, instead of using infrared light, they send binary codes to the receiver via radio waves.
This makes the range of the RF remote control much larger than that of the IR remote control. The radio frequency remote control can work at a distance of 100 feet or more. This makes them useful in applications such as garage door openers and car alarms. Now you can also find some RF remote controls that are being used in modern satellite TV systems.
However, the RF remote control is not without its own problems. Although the range is greatly improved compared to IR remotes, interference may be a problem for RF remotes because there are a lot of radio waves around us almost all the time. For example, wireless Internet and mobile phones both use radio signals.
